Cotswold Canals Connected

Nature's highway

One of the main themes of the Interpretation Plan 2023 for Cotswold Canals Connected is that of natural connectivity. This recognised the vital importance of the canal (unrestored or restored), plays as a highway for wildlife.

That importance is increased due to its proximity to the River Frome (they are constant companions for several miles). Each of the waterways is very different in character. Both waterways link the wooded Stroud Valleys with the Severn Vale, two very distinct landscapes with a diverse range of habitats and therefore, animal and plant species.

Footprint will be working with a range of stakeholders to ensure that the wildlife of the canal corridor is promoted, to encourage people to identify and look after it. This includes Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, Stroud Valleys Project and Bug Life. This will be happening during 2024 and 2025. Meantime, some images of species already seen along the Cotswold Canals.
